The Pentagon and White House tours are still in the planning stage. The Secret Service will assign us a day and time for the White House tour and the Pentagon Security Service will assign us a date and time for that tour. We have asked for Thursday morning for the White House and Wednesday afternoon for the Pentagon but those are only requests. We are calling these tours “unofficial” as transportation is not being arranged for them. We would like to thank Dan Kellum for honchoing the White House tour and Jim Jordan for suggesting and doing the sign-ups for the Pentagon.
The “OFFICIAL” part of the schedule is as follows:
Wednesday 8 Nov – Thursday 9 Nov - Check In; location Hospitality Suite 1st Floor Georgetown Room (this is a change from where we have been the last two times)
Friday 10 Nov – 0800 Marine Corps Birthday Wreath Laying Ceremony, at the World War II Memorial.
(SEE INFO BOTTOM OF PAGE)
Saturday 11 Nov – 0900 to 1600 Trip to National Museum of the Marine Corps, Quantico, VA, bus transportation available. The organization is picking up the cost but we are open to donations. While there we will have a wreath laying at our monument at 1100. 1900 Movie Night Club Room 1st Floor, Letters From Iwo Jima (In Japanese with English subtitles)
Sunday 12 Nov – 1000 Annual business meeting, 2nd floor, Rosslyn Ballroom. 1730 Annual banquet 2nd Floor Rosslyn Ballroom.
Some side notes:
*During sign-up / check-in at the Reunion make sure you identify who you want to share a table with, the hotel is setting up for 10 at a table.
*We are asking everyone to pre-register for the bus trip and the banquet and pre-pay for the banquet. The last few years we have gotten into too much of a guessing game. If you don’t preregister there is no guarantee that we will be able to add you to either event during the reunion.
*We can’t stress enough: if you are planning on going to the White House and/or the Pentagon, take a minimum of things.
Wreath Laying Ceremony
This year due to construction the Wreath Laying Ceremony will be held at the World War II Memorial. It is located on 17th Street, between Constitution and Independence Avenues, and is flanked by the Washington Monument to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west. Dale Williams will respond with how many of our members will be attending. Since we are attending as a group our dress will be Vietnam Veterans of 2/1 casual attire. Have a 2/1 Jacket? Wear it! This is a on your own event. And, we recommend you take the Metro to get to the W W II Memorial.
Smithsonian Station is the closest metro station to the World War II Memorial. The station has two exits; leave through The Mall Exit at 12th St & Jefferson Drive SW. It will be a 14-minute walk to the memorial. Another alternative is Federal Triangle Station, but you will have to walk a little further. Both stations are on the Orange, Silver, and Blue Lines of the Metro System.
